For decades, successive administrations has strived to free the United States of its perception as a coercive, expansionist nation. Yet with his blustering, repeatedly aggressive actions toward foreign nations, the U.S. leader has swiftly reawakened that concept. During his tenure, the negative U.S. stereotype is returned.

Assertive Exercise of Influence

This has been accomplished by wielding American influence in assertive and arrogant ways – by criticizing foreign nations' approaches and then threatening to punish them if they don’t bow to his expectations. Trump is doing exactly what global regulations says national leaders must refrain from. The phrase “the Ugly American” was popularized by a 1958 novel with the same name; it described the tactlessness and incompetence of U.S. representatives who typically didn’t speak the language where they were assigned and rarely communicated with the people there. Over the years, this phrase was increasingly used to characterize unaware and overbearing U.S. visitors and unaware and presumptuous US policies toward foreign countries.

Worldwide Involvement

Trump has acted like an Ugly American in multiple situations. He intervened in the domestic matters of Brazil by essentially demanding it to discontinue the prosecution of its right-leaning former president (and Trump buddy) Jair Bolsonaro for plotting to attempt a government overthrow to resume leadership. When Brazil didn’t drop the prosecution – he was convicted and handed a punishment to 27 years in incarceration – he implemented a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods.

In recent weeks, he has embodied the Negative, even Crazed, U.S. representative toward the northern neighbor when he expressed fury after viewing a commercial, supported by the province of Ontario, that contained parts of a former president Reagan oration opposing import taxes. As a response, he implemented an additional 10% tariff on products from Canada. This action increased the displeasure of the people of Canada who were already angered about Trump’s absurd idea to make Canada the additional U.S. state.

Furthermore, he has attempted to intimidate Colombia. He declared the United States would end support to the nation after its leader, the national leader, objected that the American forces had targeted a Colombian fishing boat and resulted in a casualty as part of his initiative of attacking boats suspected of carrying narcotics. Utilizing ugly, undiplomatic language, he labeled Colombia’s president an “drug trade figurehead”.

Military Intimidation

Concurrently emerge Trump’s sporadic intimidations to initiate armed attacks against the South American country.
