Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
