Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
