The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, was not quick to announce he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.

"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

Yet his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his previous Astoria home.

Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.

The property, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
