Sir Gareth Southgate has declared that he is not pursuing a return to football management, noting that it would be challenging to duplicate the higher calling he experienced as the national team coach.

He suggested his plan to channel his attention toward working with young people and combating what he described as a dominant downbeat story presently existing in the country.

Embracing Different Paths Outside of Coaching

Speaking on air, Southgate was questioned on rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the publication of his new title, his leadership-focused book, the author stated that he is highly enthusiastic about setting examples for teenagers, drawing on insights from his time as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

Southgate maintains that his time leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he observed: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Division

Southgate asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often centers on disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

His new release, Dear England, is expected to offer further insights on management and national identity inspired by his distinguished time in football.
