The Blue Jays Claim Fall Classic Matchup With Los Angeles Dodgers
George Springer contributed to the Astros claiming the World Series in the 2017 season.
Toronto's Blue Jays earned a spot in their initial Fall Classic since 1993 by overcoming the Mariners in the decisive seventh game of the American League Championship Series.
Trailing by two runs, the star outfielder delivered a three-run homer in the seventh frame, guiding the sole Canadian team in Major League Baseball to a 4-3 win in the best-of-seven series. They will now face the defending champions, the team that is the current crown, in the forthcoming Fall Classic.
"I'm just so happy for our team, the city, Canada," said Springer, an integral part of the Astros team that won the 2017 championship. "This is such an amazing experience."
Springer has now slugged 23 post-season home runs, making him third all-time behind Manny Ramirez (twenty-nine) and Altuve (27).
"It's hard to imagine another person anywhere that I want up in that moment besides George Springer with his post-season brilliance," said manager John Schneider.
Seattle, despite leading the series two games to none and three games to two, remain the sole team that has never reached in a World Series.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson said "certainly that it's painful" in the wake of his side's defeat at Rogers Centre, but praised their performance this season.
"They're an exceptional squad. Sadly that we finished on the losing end of the series," he continued.
Toronto claimed the title on their two prior appearances in 1992 and '93, and are set to host the Dodgers in game one on this Friday.
