The people of Israel commemorate second anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks advance
People have assembled throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Essential Points in Discussions
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for assistance distribution
- Post-war administration of the territory
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person return no one will be secure."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to recover," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the hostages to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the gathering, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of that day in the western district, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the evening arrives, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my little child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said additional dead people had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the south, medical staff reported.
