The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Youngster Pitarch
When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
